    Britain’s largest monastic ruin, was founded in 1132 by 13 Benedictine monks seeking a simpler life. They later became Cistercian monks.

    The temple was constructed in about 1820, at the height of the folly craze. William Danby, the master of Swinton Hall, had his men build thetemple because he thought that they didn’t have enough work to do.There are a number of pathswithin the forest in which the temple lies and also a viewing area over Leighton Reservoir.
